Comments, comments, comments

Dear Pupils,

It is heartening to see everyone hard at work today. I was especially pleased when I looked through your Science homework. Many of you made the effort to attempt the homework on your own, and did not give up even though some questions may seem difficult.

I could see that you referred to your textbooks for answers. This is the right start towards success, as the textbook always gives you the basic concepts you are required to know.

Do continue with the good work attitude. Very soon, you should see some results from your CA2.

Reading of Comics

Dear pupils,

I do not encourage the reading of comics in my classroom. You should be reading good story books to help you improve on your language. There are a variety of interesting books you may read. Roald Dahl writes interesting books which most of us enjoy.

I will not hesitate to confiscate any comic books that I see. During lessons, make sure you stay focused and not read comics.

Maths test (Decimals)

As said in my lesson, there will be a Maths test on decimals next week. Please make sure you are clear with the concepts. The textbooks exercise should be sufficient to help you get through the test.

The topics covered are:
1) Multiplication of decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.
2) Division of decimals by 10.

Please come prepared for the test.

Sample entry for Bedok Reservoir CIP activity

Please refer to the entry below on how to write your reflections on the CIP activity at Bedok Reservoir.

We went to Bedok Reservoir last Wednesday (19 May 2010) for a clean-up program. The weather was rather unkind to us and it started drizzling during the midst of our clean up. We were quite disappointed as there was not much things for us to clear. In a way, we should feel glad that the park is actually in a very good condition.

Some of our friends started picking up leaves and fooled around at the park. Our teacher Mr Yap reminded us to pick up only litter and not dried leaves.

Here are some of the reflections from our group.

Student X:

"I think it is important to keep our parks clean. Back in my own country, we were taught not to litter in our environment too. It is important not to dirty our surroundings so that others can enjoy the beautiful park we have."

Student Y:
"I thought the clean up was very meaningful as I learnt that it is not easy being a cleaner. Even though the park was relatively clean, it was quite a distance to walk. I will definitely remind people around me to keep our environment clean."

Sample entry for Deepavali in Singapore

Here is a write-up on Deepavali in Singapore. I have sourced it from http://www.travel-singapore.com/events/november.

Deepavali or "Festival of Lights" is annually held in November as to celebrate the triumph of Lord Krishna over the evil Narakasura. Lord Krishna symbolizes goodness while Narakasura represents evil; that's why it concerns with "lights," which clearly depict purity. So to speak, light will always win darkness and good can always conquer evil.

Deepavali is considered a most important day of Hindu calendar, and is arranged in Little India, another ethnic area of Singapore. It's times for rejoicing and renewal of especial Hindus and Sikhs. Of course, oil lamps play a unique part of this festival as it is believed that there are spirits of departed relatives who come back to earth and so the lights are the guidance for those wandering souls to their subsequent world. For the Indians, this festival is like a New Year celebration, while they welcome relatives and friends at their own homes for exchanging some blessings.
During this auspicious time, Serangoon Road in Little India and temples in that area such as Sri Veerama Kaliamman, Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman, and Sri Srinivasa Perumal are adorned with spectacular display of fairy lights, garlands of jasmine, and colorful arches to mark this festive period. People pour into Little India at night for celebrations, sightseeing, and festive goods such as costumes, food, furniture, arts, crafts, and jewelries.

Deepavali is taken into account of Singapore's important festivals for this time helps harmonize people, promote goodwill, and share understanding through various ethnic groups.

Back in Eunos Primary, we celebrate Deepavali during one of our Assembly periods. Usually, it is done via concert items and also informative skits on the various aspects of Deepavali.

We do have Indian friends among us who celebrate Deepavali in Eunos Primary School. They are also given early dismissal during the eve of Deepavali in order to let them prepare for their celebration.

I have not been to any of the Deepavali celebrations but if given the chance, I would love to share their joy. After all, not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to live in a multi-racial society.

A good quote to share with everyone

I've talked about some teachings of Confucius which I think is still relevant today. Just some quotes which are very useful:

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do.

Give some thoughts to these sayings.

Trading cards

A note to pupils who still persist in playing with trading cards.

I WILL NOT return you your cards if I confiscate them. They will be shredded. The only way you can have them back is to show me that you can pass all your subjects, OR your parents collect it for you.

Treat this as my final reminder.

Homework for 5th May 2010

Dear Pupils,

Please complete Booklet B of the Mathematics Practice Paper 7.

After today's incident, I am really disappointed  by some of you. It is very disheartening as a teacher to see how little importance you pay to your own future. Like I had said, being in school requires you to learn how to interact well (which all of you excel in) and also to learn some new skills.

Please do give some thoughts on how you want to spend your time in school. Are you just going to waste your 7 hours in school doing nothing but talk/quarrel/hurl vulgarities? Or are you going to make sure you make use of your 7 hours to learn something useful and work towards you personal goals?

I would like to thank the following pupils who had been good so far, and who showed that they are really interested to learn. They are:

Yu Mingmin
Siti Nur Ayuni
Muhd Shafiq
Zheng Shenzhu
Muhd Harris
Nurul
Wayne Tan

Decide on what you want. Be responsible to yourself. TIME DOES NOT WAIT FOR YOU.

Dear pupils,

Please complete the interview in your social studies activity book page 10 and 11. Marks will be awarded for this exercise. Also, finish up Chapter 4 of your Science Homework book (Water and its states). That is a very good revision for everyone as it covers everything you need to know for the chapter.

On a side note, I need to remind all of you to have adequate rest at home. Examinations are round the corner and it is essential that you sleep enough in order to concentrate better in class. Otherwise, you may end up sleeping in class and missing out on important lessons.

Hari Raya Puasa in Singapore

Here's a brief introduction on what Hari Raya Puasa is. I've found this information from http://sgholiday.com/2009/06/singapore-hari-raya-aidilfitri-holiday-in-calendar-year-2010/

Hari Raya Aidilfitri (also known as Hari Raya Lebaran, Hari Raya Idul Fitri, and Hari Raya Puasa, literally “Celebration Day of Fasting”) is the Malay term for the Muslim festival of Eid ul-Fitr or Id-ul-Fitr.

It is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan / Ramadhan, the Islamic holy month of “Puasa” (fasting). The holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It is celebrated starting on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal / Syawal.

Muslims in Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term “Hari Raya” literally means “Day of Celebration” — it is also occasionally used to refer to Eid ul-Adha in the form of “Hari Raya Aidiladha” or “Hari Raya Idul Adha”.
On this day, Muslims all over the world offer a special prayer in the morning and later visit their relatives and friends. The young will seek forgiveness from elders for their past misconduct.
In Singapore, the first day of the Hari Raya is celebrated as a public holiday, where civil servants and private sector workers alike are mostly not required to work.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although I am not a muslim and I do not celebrate Hari Raya Puasa, I still find the festival fascinating. A month before the festival, Geylang Serai will be extremely crowded with all different stalls being set up. If you stay around that area, you will feel the festival nearing as shoppers congregate to the stalls after breaking fast at night.

The sights of the stalls are simply amazing. From the stalls that sells the traditional costumes to the Ramly burger stalls, it is simply a feast for the eyes. One will start wondering how this small area will be able to accomodate the entire Muslim population in Singapore.

I do have Muslim friends and although I had yet to pay them a visit, I guess I should try to do so this year. Maybe I should also get myself a set of the Baju Kurung too. Just mentioning this makes me look forward to the holiday already.

*Chinese New Year SAMPLE write up*

Here in Singapore, we celebrate the Chinese New Year. It is during this period of time when the Chinese children collect red packets from other elders as a sign of good luck.

Traditionally in China, Chinese New Year marks the start of the Spring season. Some countries get to celebrate Chinese New Year for a full 15 days. In Singapore, even though we celebrate Chinese New Year for 15 days, we only get 2 to 3 days of public holiday.

We celebrate Chinese New Year first with a reunion dinner on the eve of the New Year. It is here where we get to sit down and eat with the entire family, including our relatives whom we do not see often.

The next few day will pass very quickly when we visit our relatives.........................

On being considerate...

More than 2 months have passed and seems like many of us are still not in the mood to really start bucking up.

I got feedback from that our class is VERY noisy. It is  noisy to the extent that it affects other classes. Just like I mentioned, even classes from across the block could hear us clearly.

I would like to make an appeal to everyone that we really buck up and start learning. For a start, may I request for everyone to talk in a civilised manner. There is no need to shout as we all have perfect hearing. Everyone appreciates being talked to in a nice way and shouting is a no-no.

Please cooperate and let our classroom be a conducive environment for everyone to learn. Everyone has the right to learn in a safe, quiet environment.
